Save im conversations disabled

When Lync 2013 client is installed, by default the feature to save conversation history to Outlook is on. Most users in my organization have not used this in the past and all it does is fill their inbox up with IM conversations and they don't even know it. There are a handful of users that do want this and use it.

I need a way to set it to be unchecked (not disabled and grayed out, but just unchecked with the ability to check) by default with the end user having the ability to check it. The only thing I've found to do anything like this is globally disabling it at the server level, at which time no clients can use it and it's grayed out. I cannot find a way to have it install being unchecked with the end user having the ability to check it.

Do I have any options?

Please try to set the parameter EnableIMAutoArchiving to $null using Set-CsClientPolicy to test the issue.

If the issue persists, you can set it to False and make sure DisableSavingIM is True so that user can save IM manually in IM conversation.

So it looks like that article is for Lync 2010 when there was an actual file menu within the conversation window to choose File - Save IM. Now Lync 2013 doesn't have a file menu, but I found you can do CTRL-S and that saves the conversation to your Outlook folder.

What a pain Lync 2013 is. There are so few configurable options and so many things are changed for the worse. I wish we had gone with the Lync 2010 client as sad as that is. I'm not sure what Microsoft was thinking.

Unfortunately not, in Lync 2010 you could set the IMAutoArchivingPolicy in the registry, however this key hasn't made it to Lync 2013. So the only options are to either leave default (enabled) or set it globally (as you've mentioned using Set-CsClientPolicy -EnableIMAutoArchiving)

You can also apply different client policies to different users, but this still won't meet your requirement

This explains it a bit more:
